Place and cause of death: peacefully at Heritage Manor of natural causes.
Bertha has donated her body to the Anatomy Department at the University of Iowa. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Anthony's Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 25, 2012.
Bertha was born on June 18, 1910, in Dubuque, daughter of William and Bertha (Palen) Andresen.
She graduated from the Visitation Academy and the Mercy School of Nursing. She married Gerald "Red" McAleece on August 26, 1935. He preceded her in death in 1984.
Bertha is survived by:
her eight children: Anne Boras, Glen Ellyn, IL
Joan Chavez, Englewood, CO
Jane (Dick) Bliss, Springfield, IL
Mary Fuhrman, Dubuque, IA
Beth (Gene) Mellentine, Denver, CO
Laura (Tom) Hoch, Aurora, CO
Gerald (Patty) McAleece, Aiken, SC
Timothy (Katherine) McAleece, Grand Rapids, MI
she was also the proud grandmother of 35 grandchildren and 56 great grandchildren
Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, Wilfred and Bertha (Palen) Andresen, a son in childbirth, five sisters, Margaret (Charles) Holmberg, Mary (Dave) Smith, Helen (Edgar) Holz, Leona (Joseph) Dolan and Gertrude (Nicholas) Sutton, three brothers, Wilfred, Charles and George Andresen, two sons-in-law, James Boras and Anthony Chavez, a grandson, Nicholas Gerald Hoch, and infant great grandchildren Norris Fuhrman and Kaitlin Fuhrman.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque, the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens or a charity of one's choice.
