Violet was born on February 2, 1924 in Dubuque, daughter of Carl E. and Clara M. (Behnke) Jansen. She married Elroy John Klaas on September 10, 1945 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dubuque. They were married for 56 years when Elroy passed away on October 28, 2001, after a long illness.
Violet was employed at the former General Dry Battery factory for ten years, followed by two years in the offices of J. F. Stampfer Department Store. She spent three years at Western Grocer and Central States Foods Inc. She also spent ten years in the office of A. Y. McDonald Mfg. Company before she retired in 1972. Violet graduated from Holy Ghost Junior High School on June 3, 1938 and from the Immaculate Conception Academy on June 6, 1941, after which she attended Bayless Business College for one year.
She was a member of Nativity Catholic Church since 1957, the Nativity Rosary Society, the Nativity Guild and the A.C.C.W. Since 1941 Violet was a member of the ICA Alumnae Association, long time member of the Iowa Tops Chapter IA 1024, Dubuque, a member of the Dubuque Bowling Association for several years and an Associate member of the UAW Local 94.
She enjoyed bowling, doing crossword puzzles , was an avid reader and wrote many long letters to family and friends. She also enjoyed planting, raising flowers and working in her vegetable garden. In her later years she enjoyed genealogy and tried to keep family records up to date.
She and Elroy both enjoyed traveling before Elroy's health problems became too severe to do that anymore. Violet enjoyed and appreciated her grandchildren and was happy they all lived close by. Violet took care of Elroy and nursed him in his last twenty years of life.
Violet is survived by her daughter, Donna M. (Kenneth) Luchtenburg, four grandchildren, Michael K. of Dubuque, Ann M. of Waterloo, IA and Carol J. and Sara M. both at home. Three sisters Evelyn Wurst of Minneapolis, MN, Ellen Meehan of Roseville CA, and Rosalind "Dee" (David) Bierie of East Dubuque, IL, a sister-in-law, Lou Ann Jansen of Dubuque and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Merlin, Norman and Lester Jansen and one sister, Pearl R. (Jansen) Meyers.
Violet had many serious health problems in the twelve years since Elroy died and needed the help she got from Donna and her family so she could still live in her home on Wood Street.
In lieu of flowers a Violet M. Klaas memorial fund has been established.
The family wished to thank the doctors and nurses who cared for Violet in her last days. Dr. Andrea Ries, Dr. John Whalen, Dr. Karen Loukinen. The staff at Mercy Medical Center, Manor Care Health Services and Hospice of Dubuque.
