Patriotic Emblem

Allen R. Mescher, age 101, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 1:05 p.m., on Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at Bethany Home, surrounded by his loving family. To honor Allen's life, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at St. Anthony's Church, 1880 Saint Ambrose Street, with his son, Rev. Michael Mescher, officiating. To celebrate Allen's life, family and friends may visit from 9:30 a.m., until the time of services at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, at St. Anthony's Church. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery, New Vienna, Iowa, where full military honors will be accorded. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is in charge of arrangements.

Allen was born on October 19, 1916, in New Vienna, Iowa, son of Anton and Mary (Sandman) Mescher.

Allen honorably served his country as a pilot with the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII. He was very proud of his service and continued to celebrate every Veteran's Day by still wearing his original dress uniform. He would marry the love of his life, Violet Holl, on November 13, 1948, in Dubuque, and they would be blessed with 69 years together, as well as 4 truly adored children. Allen was no stranger to the value of an honest day's work and loyally devoted 37 years of his working career to Georgia Pacific, before eventually retiring as general manager. Faith was also a very integral part of Allen's life and he displayed it prominently, not only in his daily words, thoughts and actions, but quite regularly he could be found volunteering his time with his beloved St. Anthony's Church. Allen was very handy with a tool belt and was not only competent enough to tackle any task which was laid before him, but he is also one of the few men who can actually claim that they built their own home with their own two hands. When Allen was fortunate enough to find some down time, he always looked forward to loading up the family and heading out into the great outdoors for their next big camping adventure. Above all though, family was the most important aspect of Allen's life and he absolutely cherished every opportunity to spend some quality time with those he loved. Allen has surely seen many changes in the world around him during his 101 year journey on this earth, and we now pray, as his heavenly journey begins, that he's enjoying the perfect splendor of his new world in the companionship of his family members' who've been called home ahead of him. We will miss you dearly Allen, but we'll find peace in time while you rest easy in your Heavenly Father's arms until we are all joyfully reunited again one day.
