Heart Emblem

Stella A. Schueller-Backes, age 98, of Dubuque, Iowa, was called home peacefully at 7:00 a.m., on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Stonehill Care Center, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Stella's life, funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, March 9, 2017, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Avenue, with Rev. Aaron R. Junge officiating. To celebrate Stella's life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture wake service held at 6:30 p.m. Entombment will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.

Stella was born on May 25, 1918, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Peter and Anna (Neyens) Kintzle.

Stella was a proud lifelong resident of the Sherrill/Dubuque area for almost a century, and would definitely leave the world around her in better condition with an abundance of love and beautiful memories to cherish. Stella was united in marriage to Joseph Schueller on April 10, 1939, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Sherrill, IA. They would be blessed with 39 wonderful years, and 7 precious children, together before he was called home ahead of her on November 6, 1978. Stella would later discover loving companionship once again and be united in marriage to Leonard Backes on November 13, 1992, at Holy Ghost Church in Dubuque. Unfortunately their union would only last 11 months as Leonard was also called home ahead of Stella on October 19, 1993. Stella was definitely a nurturing housewife at heart, but she would also devote her time and talents at the Eska Co. for 28 years before fully retiring. She was a gentle woman, of great faith, who would hold dear her long-time membership at Holy Ghost Church. When Stella wasn't taking care of her family, and her home, you could easily find her practicing her throws at the bowling alley, working on a blackout at the bingo hall, or even gathered around the kitchen table with family and friends for an exciting evening of euchre. Stella would also find joy in a relaxing afternoon of baiting her hook on the water's edge, weeding her garden with visions of a bountiful harvest, or a pleasant summer evening below the stars sitting around the weekend campfire. Stella has lived a full and prosperous life, but it will always be the moments and memories where family were involved that she treasured most. Our hearts weigh heavy today with the loss of our sweet Stella, but we gracefully accept the reality that all of our lives have been positively impacted throughout her 98 year earthly journey, and we find peace and comfort in knowing that she is once again reunited with all of her loving family members who've been called home already.

Those left to cherish Stella's memory include

her children,
Diane Boge, Dubuque, IA,
Dorothy Crews, Dubuque, IA,
Ron (Doris) Schueller, Austin, TX,

16 grandchildren;

31 great-grandchildren;

1 great great-granddaughter;

her sister,
Anna Reinsbach, Janesville, WI;

and a sister-in-law,
Irma Kintzle, Dubuque, IA.

Stella was preceded in death by her parents; her 1st husband, Joseph Schueller; her 2nd husband, Leonard Backes; a son, Gene Schueller; 3 grandchildren, Heather Schueller, Jessie Ingle and Robert Boge; 5 sisters, Jeanette (Don) Jaeger, Irene (Tony) Schueller, Viola (Roy) Pfohl, Clara (Whitey) Richman and Margaret (Ralph) Dupont; 4 brothers, Nicholas Kintzle, Gerald (Marlene) Kintzle, Elmer Kintzle, and Earl (Rita) Kintzle; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Schueller; and 3 sons-in-law, Ron Boge, Leon Kennicker and Francis Crews.

A Stella A. Schueller-Backes memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among her favorite charities.

Stella's family would like to extend a sincere heartfelt thank you to the wonderful nurses and staff at Stonehill, and Hospice of Dubuque, for all of their kind, professional and attentive care of Stella and her family.
