Shirley Ann (Heiring) Klein, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, age 75, of Rickardsville, IA, was called home peacefully on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at home, surrounded by her loving family, after a long, brave battle with cancer. To honor Shirley's life, a Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, November 10, 2016, at St. Joseph Church, 20249 St. Joseph Drive, Rickardsville, IA, with Rev. Noah J. Diehm officiating. To celebrate Shirley's life, family and friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., on Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture wake service held at 12:30 p.m. Family and friends may also visit from 10:00 a.m., until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2016, at St. Joseph Church, Rickardsville. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Rickardsville, IA.

Shirley was born on December 12, 1940, in Farley, Iowa, daughter of Albert and Alvina (Vorwald) Heiring.

Shirley grew up in Holy Cross, graduated from Holy Cross High School in 1958 and from Bayless Business College in 1959. She married her high-school sweetheart, Eugene Klein, on June 17, 1961, and they began farming near Rickardsville where they raised four children. Shirley joined the staff of Dubuque Internal Medicine in 1983, and was employed there until her retirement in 2007. She also worked part-time for Sherrill Mutual Insurance for many years. Shirley was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rickardsville. She loved music and was an accomplished musician. Shirley directed and accompanied the church choir for more than thirty years. She served on the pastorate council and the liturgy committee of St. LaSalle pastorate, and volunteered helping the students at LaSalle Catholic School. Shirley loved her family, her friends, and her faith. She was a great cook who loved to prepare tasty dishes and treats for her family. She enjoyed bowling, dominoes and card games with friends, loved watching Jeopardy and playing it on the computer, and especially liked playing Scrabble and cribbage with her family. She was a world-class grandmother who gave special love and care to her twelve grandchildren and her great-granddaughter. Shirley was always ready to help others. She lived out her days with faith and remarkable courage.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Gene Klein; her sisters, Sedelle Tegeler, Lucille Heying, Helen Bakula and Lois Ross; her brothers, Donald Heiring and Gerald Heiring; and her in-laws, Clarence and Angeline Klein, Gilbert Tegeler, Walter Heying, Ted Bakula, William McGuire, Duane Ross, Dave Williams, Leo Rusch, Mike Salatino, Marvin Klein and Melvin and Anna Mae Brimeyer.

A Shirley Ann Klein memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among Shirley's favorite charities.

Shirley's family would like to thank Dr. Hermann and the doctors, nurses, and staffs of the Oncology Department at Dubuque Internal Medicine and Finley Hospital for their excellent care for Shirley and her family. They would also like to thank Hospice of Dubuque for all of their assistance.
