Love Emblem

Ruth H. Elliott, age 94, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 7:40 p.m., on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at Luther Manor. To honor Ruth's life, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Behr Funeral Home, with Pastor Jay Ilten officiating. To celebrate Ruth's life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m., until the time of services at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

Ruth was born on August 31, 1922, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Leslie and Emma (Kemp) Sawvel.

Ruth was proud to be born, raised and live in Dubuque for her entire 94 year journey here on earth. She eventually crossed paths with the love of her life, Frank Elliott, and the couple was united in marriage on October 11, 1941, in Dubuque. They were blessed with 44 wonderful years together, and 2 children, before Frank was called home ahead of her on February 15, 1986. Not only did Ruth put her domestic talents to good use nurturing her family, but she also served others with the Dubuque Community Schools for 21 years, and even devoted another 8 years to Luther Manor before finally retiring. Ruth was a truly a faith filled woman and was quite content and fulfilled to be a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church. In her spare time, Ruth enjoyed a little "retail therapy", watching her favorite TV programs, and keeping up with the instant buzz about the community by listening to her scanner. Ruth's greatest joy, however, came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, who undeniably meant the world to her. Ruth's departure from our immediate lives was more sudden than we were prepared for, but we are absolutely blessed with the memories, lessons and love she leaves behind and we are thankful that she is, once again, holding hands with her beloved Frank.

Those left to cherish Ruth's memory include

her 2 children,
Phyllis Behrens, Dubuque, IA
and Michael (Mary) Elliott, Round Lake Park, IL;

her 6 grandchildren,
Lisa (Dan) Nicks, Dean (Kelly) Behrens, Ryan (Lisa Ridgely) Elliott, Michelle Elliott, Matt (Lauren) Elliott and Mitchell (fiancé Erin McGhee) Elliott;

her 6 great-grandchildren,
Carson Behrens, Kyle Behrens, Danielle (Ben) Landgraf, Sam Nicks, Malik Clarke and Marcus Marcado;

and her 2 great great-grandchildren,
Lily Landgraf and Caison Behrens.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank Elliott; 3 sisters, Dorothy (Lester) Thoman, Gladys (Charles) Menadue and Mae (Joe) Tschiggfrie; and 2 brothers, Leslie (Ruth) Sawvel and Donald (Katherine) Sawvel.

A Ruth H. Elliott memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among her favorite charities.

Ruth's family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Luther Manor for their compassionate and loving care of Ruth and her family; especially Deb, who went above and beyond.
