Dove Emblem

Ronald L. Hammel, age 72, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 10:50 a.m., on Thursday, October 20, 2016, at Sunnycrest Manor, surrounded by his loving family. To honor Ron's life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at Holy Spirit Parish, Sacred Heart Church, 2215 Windsor Avenue, with Rev. Dwayne J. Thoman officiating. To celebrate Ron's life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture wake service held at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Ron was born on December 31, 1943, in Dubuque, son of Omer and Loretta (Schueller) Hammel.

Ron was a proud lifelong Dubuquer who would eventually meet his future bride, Marcia Everist, and they would be joyfully united in marriage on October 15, 1966. They would be blessed with 2 children, and 50 wonderful years together; which the Lord was kind enough to allow them to celebrate this week before calling Ron home. Ron would invest over 40 years of his working career at Georgia Pacific, and St. Regis Paper, before finally retiring in 2002. Ron's faith life has been devoted to Sacred Heart Church, where he has been a longtime member. Ron had many hobbies over the years which would include painting and plaster of paris modeling, but his favorite would definitely have to be the hours he spent in his workshop creating amazingly intricate woodworking projects. From beautiful baby beds, to fabulous furniture and toys for those he loved to enjoy; if Ron's feet were slightly covered in saw dust, or the aroma of a fresh coat of varnish permeated the air, you knew that he had found some well earned contentment in his day. But the one true desire in Ron's life was to provide and care for his family. He took his responsibility to his family seriously and everyday was another venture to bring them joy, love or even simply security under his watch. Sadly, Ron's earthly journey has ended today and only the abundant memories of his soul among us remain. But we are thankful that he will once again be reunited with his parents and siblings, who will surely keep him company until we can all be rejoined together again in Heaven one day.

Those left to cherish Ron's memory include

his loving wife of 50 years,
Marcia Hammel;

his children,
Ronald (Darcy) Hammel, II,
and Jacqueline (Kevin) Ansel, both of Dubuque;

his grandchildren,
Michael Hummel, Timothy Hammel, Elijah Hammel, Kaden Ansel, Kendra Ansel and Kyrah Ansel;

his brothers,
William (LaVon) Hammel
and Gerald (Carol) Hammel, both of Dubuque;

a sister-in-law,
Jean Hammel, Dubuque, IA;

and two brothers-in-law,
Tom Zwack,
and Roger Dean, both of Dubuque.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Joseph, in infancy, and Thomas Hammel; and 2 sisters, Pat Zwack and Kay Dean.

A Ronald L. Hammel memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among his favorite charities.

Ron's family would like to thank Dr. Ringold, and the nurses and staff at Ennoble Manor, Sunnycrest and Hospice of Dubuque, especially Lindsey, for all of their compassionate care and support.
