Richard J. "Dick" Theis, age 79, of Dubuque, was called home suddenly at 3:01 p.m., on Monday, December 26, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, surrounded by his loving family. To honor Dick's life, funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, December 30, 2016, at the Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Road, with Rev. Joseph L. Hauer officiating. To celebrate Dick's life, family and friends may visit from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Thursday, December 29, 2016, at the Church of the Resurrection, where there will be a parish scripture wake service held at 6:30 p.m.. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps. League. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is in charge of arrangements.

Dick was born on August 5, 1937, in Dubuque, son of John and Gladys (Horsfall) Theis.

Dick proudly graduated from Loras Academy in 1955, and would go on to honorably serve his country in the U.S. Marine Corps., before eventually being united in marriage to his true love, Lavonne Klein, on April 23, 1960. Their union would begin at Holy Ghost Church and culminate in 56 wonderful years together, and five children. Dick would invest the early years of his working career with the railroad before moving on to the Dubuque Fire Department, where he spent 27 years before retiring in 1992 as a Captain. When Dick wasn't at work, some of his favorite hours were spent out on the acreage they purchased in 1976, where he had planted over 50,000 trees throughout the years. He was also an avid athlete and outdoorsman who never met an opportunity or challenge he wouldn't accept. Dick was happiest when he was on one of his favorite turkey hunts, capturing a hole in one on the golf course, breaking in a new pair of running shoes, or even helping develop the growth of field archery in the Dubuque area. But, without a doubt Dick's family was his pride and joy. A day spent with his bride, his children or his adored grandchildren was always going to be considered a day well spent in Dick's mind. Unfortunately, Dick swam his final lap in the Loras pool, and celebrated his last earthly Christmas. We are grateful to know and understand that the Lord was kind and gracious enough to give us one last perfectly precious day with Dick to treasure until we are all reunited again.

Those left to cherish Dick's memory include

his loving wife,
Lavonne Theis, Peosta;

his five children,
Jeff (Vickie) Theis, Dubuque,
Michael (Mary Beth) Theis, Balltown,
Dean (Lori) Theis, Rock Island, IL.,
Angie (Shawn) Connolly, Dubuque
and Lee (Cindy Oliver) Theis, Bellevue;

his eight grandchildren,
Casey Theis, Megan Theis, Sam Theis, Jake Theis, Mollie Theis, Sydney Connolly, Erin Connolly and Peyton Connolly;

his four siblings,
Lynne Walczak, Lafayette, GA,
Janet Stelpflug, Kieler, WI,
Joanne Swift
and Gladys (Richard) Meehan, both of Dubuque;

and his three sisters-in law,
Kathleen Hogan, Dubuque
Carol Theis, Garnavillo
and Sandy Smothers, Oelwein.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, twin brother Ronald Theis, Thomas Theis, Terry Theis and James (Linda) Theis; and his brothers-in-law, Richard Walczak, Donald Stelpflug and Gene Swift.

A Richard J. Theis memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among his favorite charities.

The family would like to thank Dr. McKeon, the nurses and staff at Mercy Hospital and the University of Iowa, and the Life Flight crew, for all of their professional and compassionate care.
