Richard H. "Dick" Shaffer, age 76, of Dubuque, IA, was called home peacefully at 9:40 p.m., on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, surrounded by his loving family. To honor Dick's life, funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, with Deacon John Stierman officiating. To celebrate Dick's life, family and friends may visit from 2:00 p.m., until the time of services at 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, at Behr Funeral Home.

Dick was born on November 2, 1940, in Dubuque, IA, son of William and Edna (Maas) Shaffer.

Dick was united in marriage to Patricia Tracy on June 11, 1960, at St. Mary's Church in Dubuque. They were truly blessed with almost 57 years together, and 5 children. Dick was a very talented auto body technician who would invest his first 10 years with Wilson Brothers before eventually moving to Dan Kruse Pontiac, where he would devote another 34 years to his trade before finally retiring in 2004. Dick was a loyal man, who was not only proud to be a union member over the years, but also made no apologies for always putting his family first. In his free time, one of Dick's favorite pastimes was watching his beloved Cubbies, and their World Series win on his birthday last year was one of the greatest gifts Dick could have ever asked for. Our hearts ache with the loss of our husband, father and grandfather, but we are grateful for all of the memories he leaves behind and the countless lessons in the importance of delivery when it comes to some good old fashion sarcasm in your day.

Those left to cherish Dick's memory include

his loving wife,
Patricia "Pat" Shaffer, Dubuque, IA;

his 4 sons,
Greg (Joy) Shaffer, Dubuque, IA,
Steve (Maryann) Shaffer, Dubuque, IA,
Jeff Shaffer, Dubuque, IA
and Eric (Kristi) Shaffer, Robins, IA;

his 13 grandchildren,
Holly (Flaco) Santoyo, Kayla (Anjison) DePaepe, Hayley Shaffer, Brandon Shaffer, Hunter Shaffer, Jared Shaffer, Chandler Shaffer, Cassandra Shaffer, Asia Shaffer, Payzlee Shaffer, Jovi, Kinzi and Addi;

his 6 great-grandchildren;

and his 5 siblings,
Shirley (Pete Schwartz) Mihalakis, Dubuque, IA,
William "Bill" Shaffer, Northwood, IA,
Clarence Shaffer, Dubuque, IA,
Jim (Rose) Shaffer, Dubuque, IA
and Harold (Sue) Shaffer, Dubuque, IA.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Gail Mussehl; and 8 siblings, Irvin (Ilene) Shaffer, Jack (Sue) Shaffer, Donnie (Judy) Shaffer, Alice Voels, Rita (Tony) Pfab, Lorraine (Eldon) Dimitroff, Leonard (Diane "Dede" Meyer) Shaffer and Mary Breitbach.

A Richard H. "Dick" Shaffer memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among his favorite charities.

Dick's family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Mercy Hospital for their kind, attentive and professional care of Dick and his family.
