Dove Emblem

Merlyn E. Schroeder, age 95, of Dubuque, Iowa, was called home peacefully at 8:32 a.m., on Monday, December 5, 2016, at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. To honor Merlyn's life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, December 9, 2016, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, with Pastor Pamela Starr officiating. To celebrate Merlyn's life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Thursday, December 8, 2016, at Behr Funeral Home. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

Merlyn was born on February 27, 1921, in Dubuque, Iowa, of Harry and Lillian (Macker) Schroeder.

Merlyn was a lifelong Dubuque resident who was truly blessed with 95 years among his family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. He would eventually meet, and fall in love with his soul-mate, Jean Harris. They would be united in marriage on September 22, 1945, at Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ. Merlyn, and his beautiful bride, would share 61 wonderful years together, and be blessed with a deeply adored son, Gary, before she was called home ahead of him on January 27, 2007. Merlyn was a loyal and dedicated employee at Interstate Power for over 45 years, eventually retiring as a supervisor in customer service. After retiring, Merlyn would go on to invest 15 more years, of his time and talents, with the Five Flags Center, where he and Jean would spend countless hours working together at numerous community events. Merlyn was a longtime member of both Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ and the I.B.E.W. Local #269, where he was recently honored with a 75 year membership award. Merlyn would find great joy in some of life's simple pleasures. An excursion to the waters edge with Jean and the grandkids, with fishing poles and a tackle box in hand, would not only place a smile upon Merlyn's face, but also create wonderful memories for all to treasure. Merlyn has surely left his mark on the world he leaves behind today, and the examples of faith, love and honor he modeled will live on in his family for generations to come. Our hearts truly ache with the sudden absence of Merlyn from our daily lives, but we find peace in knowing he'll finally be celebrating Christmas with Jean once again this year.

Those left to cherish Merlyn's memory include

his son,
Gary (Barb) Schroeder, Dubuque, IA;

his 3 grandchildren,
Cathy (Kevin McLaughlin) Ritter, St. Augustine, FL,
Sgt. 1st Class retired William (Angie) Schroeder, San Antonio, TX
and Heather (Jessica Dyar) Schroeder, Madison, WI;

a great-granddaughter,
Kelsey Isaacson, Bloomington, IL;

his sister,
Elaine Mellon, Dubuque, IA;

and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Merlyn was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Jean Schroeder; and 2 brothers-in-law, Maurice Mellon and Robert (Maxine) Harris.

In lieu of flowers, a Merlyn E. Schroeder memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among his favorite charities.

Merlyn's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Cao, the Dubuque Fire Department, and the nurses and staff at Dubuque Specialty Care and Finley Hospital for all of their kind, loving and compassionate care of Merlyn.
