Army Emblem

Merlin J. Thies, age 82, of Dubuque, Iowa, was called home peacefully at 5:49 p.m., on Monday, March 20, 2017, at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. To honor Merlin's life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, March 24, 2017, at Holy Spirit Parish, Sacred Heart Church, 2215 Windsor Avenue, with Rev. Dwayne J. Thoman officiating. To celebrate Merlin's life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where a parish scripture wake service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Merlin was born on September 16, 1934, in LaMotte, Iowa, son of Michael and Marcella (Clasen) Thies.

Merlin proudly served his county in the U.S. Army and would see much of Europe during his time after WWII. Merlin was united in marriage to his true love, Elizabeth Haupert, on September 22, 1962, at Sacred Heart Church in Dubuque. They would be blessed with 54 wonderful years together and countless memories of a truly loving and committed couple. Merlin spent his working years with Union Oil in Michigan and would eventually move back to the Dubuque area after retirement. In his free time, Merlin definitely enjoyed traveling and discovering new sights with his beautiful bride, Elizabeth, by his side. Merlin spent his 82 years here on earth continually displaying the values of an honorable husband, an honest man and a caring friend. His desire to leave a positive mark on the world he leaves behind is abundantly clear for all to witness. Sadly, Merlin has been called home suddenly, and the hearts of those who knew and loved him are feeling quite heavy today. But we know, and trust, that in time we'll all see him again and once more recapture that feeling of being in the presence of such a likeable and good man.

Those left to cherish Merlin's memory include

his loving wife,
Elizabeth "Liz" Thies, Dubuque, IA;

his brother,
Bob Thies, Clinton, IA;

and several nieces and nephews.

Merlin was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Mary Beck.

A Merlin J. Thies memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among his favorite charities.
