Love Emblem

Mary Maureen Hartnett, age 91, of Dubuque, Iowa, was called home peacefully at 12:25 p.m., on Monday, November 7, 2016, at Stonehill Care Center, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Maureen's life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, November 14, 2016, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 703 West 5th Street, Sioux City, Iowa, with Rev. William Vit officiating. To celebrate Maureen's life, family and friends may visit from 9:30 a.m., until the time of services at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Sioux City. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, Dubuque, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.

Maureen was born on May 19, 1925, in South Sioux City, NE, daughter of Charles and Agnes (Sullivan) Keenan.

Maureen was born and raised in Nebraska, where she attended South Sioux City Nebraska High School and went on to eventually graduate from the St. Vincent School of Nursing in Sioux City in 1945. Maureen has always valued her education and would joyfully maintain a longtime membership with the St. Vincent School of Nursing Alumni. She was united in marriage to John Hartnett in 1945, and they were blessed with 46 years together before he was called home ahead of her on December 21, 1991. Maureen was deeply devoted to her nursing career and faithfully cared for others at both, St. Vincent and St. Luke's Hospitals, for 40 years until her retirement. Maureen's faith was ever present, throughout her earthly journey, and she was a proud lifelong member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. Caring for her family, and home, were of the utmost importance to Maureen. Her talents in the kitchen were legendary and she took great pride in providing delicious meals for her family and friends. She was also gifted with a green thumb and loved to tend to her garden as each season came and went. But at the end of the day, if a little quiet time presented itself, you could easily find Maureen curled up in a blanket and a good book. Our hearts ache as the departure of a very kind and gentle woman becomes a reality today for those of us left behind. But we know that she now finds peace in a most joyous reunion with her loving husband, John, and thankfully the memories she leaves behind remain to be treasured by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish Maureen's memory include

her loving daughter,
Donna (Charles) Juergens, Dubuque, IA;

her granddaughters,
Katherine (Merrill) Wolf, Lincolnshire, IL
and Julia (Mike) McKibben, New Lennox, IL;

3 great grandchildren,
Andrew and Charles Wolf, and Madeline McKibben;

a sister-in-law,
Joyce Hartnett, South Sioux City, NE;

a brother-in-law,
Tom Hartnett, Clearwater, FL;

2 nephews,
Dr. C.E. (Rhonda) Keenan Jr., LeMars, IA,
Brad (Tammy) Hartnett, South Sioux City, NE
and several other nieces and nephews.

Maureen was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, John Hartnett; 1 brother, Dr. C.E. (Shirley) Keenan Sr.; 2 sisters-in-law, Patricia (Wayne) South and Bonnie (Bill) Cosegrove; 2 brothers-in-law, Francis Hartnett and Gerald Hartnett; and one nephew, Dr. Don (Trudy) Keenan.

A Mary Maureen Hartnett memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among her favorite charities.

Maureen's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff of Stonehill, and Hospice of Dubuque, for all of the kind, loving and compassionate care they have provided to Maureen and her family.
