Martin W. "Marty" Hammerand, age 80, of Dubuque, was called home suddenly on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at home, after a sudden illness. To honor Marty's life, funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, 5131 Sherrill Road, with Rev. Noah J. Diehm officiating. To celebrate Marty's life, family and friends may visit from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Monday, May 15, 2017, at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, where a parish scripture wake service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is in charge of arrangements.

Marty was born on March 12, 1937, in Sherrill, Iowa, son of John and Velma (Hartbecke) Hammerand.

Marty was united in marriage to Norma Jean Oberfoell on February 2, 1963, at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Sherrill. They were blessed with 51 years together, and 4 wonderful children, before she was called home ahead of him on June 5, 2014. Marty was a lifelong dairy farmer who earnestly worked his family farm in the Mud Lake area. Marty truly loved caring for his piece of God's creation, but when he wasn't out in the fields, or tending to the livestock, he could easily be found at the waters edge relaxing on his favorite bench and visiting with all the passer by's. He also found great joy in every opportunity to gather with family and continually found contentment and happiness whether it was a simple visit out in the yard, a friendly game of cards with friends, a little time to hang out with the grandkids, or even the especially treasured memories created on the annual family camp-out. He was also a man of strong character and faith who was quite proud to be a longtime member of Ss. Peter and Paul Church. We are deeply shocked and saddened by Marty's sudden passing from this life to the next, but we definitely take comfort in knowing that he and Norma Jean are once again reunited and now preparing their heavenly home for future family gatherings while Marty is surely refining his legendary sense of humor to accommodate nothing but clean jokes from now on.

Those left to cherish Marty's memory include

his 4 children,
Tim (Lynne) Hammerand, Dubuque, IA,
Douglas (Christine) Hammerand, Carlisle, IA,
Victoria (Brian) Hein, Durant, IA
and Amy (JR) Gregoire, North Liberty, IA;

9 grandchildren,
Elizabeth (Tommy) Schmitt, Jennifer Hammerand, Derek Hammerand, Brittan, Trey, Garrett and Noah Gregoire, Grant and Elise Hein;

3 great-grandchildren,
Ethan and Madeline Schmitt and Akaela Hammerand;

and his siblings,
David (Carol) Hammerand, Sherrill, IA,
JoAnn (Raymond "Blackie") Waller, Key West, IA,
Arlan (Midge) Hammerand, Sherrill, IA,
Walter (Dorothy) Hammerand, Fennimore, WI,
Gloria (Doug) Lenhart, Zwingle, IA
and Alice (Don) Welter, Bankston, IA.

Marty was preceded in death by his parents; and his loving wife, Norma Jean Hammerand.

A Martin W. "Marty" Hammerand memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among his favorite charities.
