Heart Emblem

Marian L. Murphy, age 86, of Dubuque, and formerly of Bellevue, was called home peacefully at 2:10 a.m., on Friday, September 1, 2017, at Hawkeye Care Center, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Marian's life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Avenue, with Rev. Dwayne J. Thoman officiating. To celebrate Marian's life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Monday, September 4, 2017, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where a parish scripture wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Marian was born on September 19, 1930, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of William and Irene (Hipschen) Boxleiter.

Marian was united in marriage to the love of her life, Daniel Murphy, on February 9, 1948, at Holy Ghost Church in Dubuque. They were blessed with 48 wonderful years together, and 3 daughters, before Daniel was called home ahead of her on April 26, 1996. Marian had a helpful personality and put her talents to use as an operator with the telephone company for over 30 years until her well earned retirement. Marian wasn't all about work though, she did enjoy trying her luck with the "one arm bandits" at the local casinos; usually donating to the cause, but continually being patient enough to occasionally win a nice jackpot. Marian was also quite a card player who religiously kept a fresh deck in her purse just in case a festive game of Euchre or Cribbage was about to break out. Marian was also known for her affinity for a relaxing day of fishing from the rivers bank, or even some productive hours in the kitchen creating a fantastic meal to share with her loved ones, or even her world famous chicken wings when a special occasion arose. Some of the most treasured moments in Marian's life though clearly revolved around her 7 grandchildren. Whether is was the weekly summer vacation with everyone together to make lifelong memories, or a more random and simple gathering, Marian was always in her glory when she was in the presence of her deeply adored family. Sadly, Marian has completed her earthly journey today, just a couple of weeks short of being given 87 years among us, but we know that she has finally found relief from her physical ailments and is, once again, joyfully holding hands with her eternal love, Daniel. Thank you Mom and Grandma for all of the love, joy and laughs you've shared along the way and we'll surely remember them all with true fondness until we meet again.

Those left to cherish Marian's memory include

her daughters,
Gayle (Rich) Atkins,
Susan (Ken Hansen) Saffran
and Peggy (Harris) Schaller, all of Dubuque, IA;

her 7 grandchildren;

her 16 great-grandchildren;

her 4 great great-grandchildren;

her sister,
Elizabeth "Betty" Gibson, Dubuque, IA;

and her brothers-in-law,
Larry Murphy
and Robert "Bob" Murphy.

Marian was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Daniel Murphy; a grandson, Alan Saffran; a son-in-law, John Saffran; 2 brothers, Donald (Betty) Boxleiter and Raymond (Stella) Boxleiter; and 2 brothers-in-law, Joseph Sutter and William Gibson.

A Marian L. Murphy memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among her favorite charities.

Marian's family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Hawkeye Care Center, and Hospice of Dubuque, especially Jennifer and Jeanette, for their kind, compassionate and professional care of Marian, and her family.
