Dove Emblem

Luella Meyer Frost, age 86 of Saint Donatus, Iowa died peacefully on September 18, 2017 in her family home of lung cancer with her family & faithful canine companion Gilda at her side.

Born on June 19th, 1931 in Lime Springs, Iowa Luella was the 7th child of John and Josephine Meyer. She grew up on a small farm without electricity or indoor plumbing. Luella was always a good athlete who played basketball and kittenball at Lime Springs High School. After high school graduation, she earned her teaching degree from Teacher's College (later to become University of Northern Iowa). Luella taught first through fourth grade at Waucoma and West Branch, Iowa schools.

Luella married her college sweetheart John F. (Jack) Frost of Jesup Iowa. Jack was a first year medical student at the University of Iowa when they first met. They married a year later and relocated to West Branch Iowa until Jack finished medical school. Upon graduation, Jack and Luella moved to Wichita, KS for Jack's internship. Jack enlisted the United States Air Force a year later and they spend the next 4 years moving to a number of different states. By the time Jack finished his tour of duty, Luella had borne him 5 sons and the sixth and final followed a short time later, making a complete basketball team with one bench warmer. In 1963 Luella and Jack finally put down roots in Saint Donatus where they raised their family.

Over the years, Luella and Jack were partners in several businesses including Tri-State Dermatology, Hypo Speed Shop, and Action Performance Exotic Motor Cars. Luella managed Tri-State Dermatology and was Dr. Frost's chief surgical assistant. Luella also was the CEO of Action Performance. Luella and Jack enjoyed collecting exotic cars and participating in the racing motor sports. Luella and Jack were inseparable in their everyday lives. Their family vacations were all thinly veiled excuses to visit automotive- related attractions, like the trips across country where they "coincidentally" visited the headquarters of Hooker Header and Cragar Mags, or the annual trip to Florida where Dr. Frost volunteered as a Track Medical Doctor for the 12 Hours of Sebring from 1964 to 1972.

Luella and Jack travelled extensively (fulfilling their childhood dreams) throughout the USA and Europe. Through these travels, they enjoyed the cuisine of the regions they visited. Luella quickly became fascinated with the culinary arts and she became an accomplished home chef, inspiring her boys to be great cooks too. Their travels usually included the boys who equally enjoyed these experiences. Food and family blended together to create cherished memories of their parents and family time together.

Luella was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years John Francis Frost MD (Jack), her oldest son Gregory Michael Frost, and Greg's wife Candas Kay Frost. She is survived by her 5 sons Christopher J. Frost MD, John Frost, Marc L Frost MD, Michael Frost and Andrew M. Frost. Luella was the proud Grandmother of 9 and she leaves behind 18 great grandchildren.

Luella was a lover of animals and she welcomed many strays into her loving pack over her many years including: Schwartz, Storm, Caesar, Red Dog, Prince, Princess and Steve Kalmes.

Luella and the entire Frost family would like to thank Pat Koenig for her many years of friendship and dedication as well as the caregivers at Dubuque Hospice and Home Instead.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dubuque Humane Society.

Private Family Memorial services for Luella will be held at a later date.
