Leo A. Abitz, age 78, of Dubuque, Iowa, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family at 11:20 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 7, 2014, at Holy Spirit Parish, Sacred Heart Church, 2215 Windsor Ave., with Rev. Alan J. Dietzenbach officiating. To celebrate Leo's life, friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service said at 5:30 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Leo was born on February 25, 1936, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Julius and Margaret (Groeber) Abitz.

Leo served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1960. He married LaVon Herbst on August 29, 1964, at St. Philomena's Church in Asbury. She preceded him in death on September 13, 2007. Leo was employed at the Dubuque Packing Company for 43 ½ years until his retirement in 1999. He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church and also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Leo was an avid gardener who especially enjoyed raising dahlia flowers. Family was extremely important to Leo. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and also enjoyed going to lunch with his nephews at Wendy's.

his grandchildren,
Danielle (Taylor) Chapman, Brandon Swift, Zachary and Natalie Aird, Sadie and Joseph Abitz, Grace and Benjamin Scott.

Leo was preceded in death by, his parents, his wife, LaVon, 2 grandsons, Joshua and Jacob Aird, and his siblings, Julia Gulyash, Joseph Abitz, John Abitz, Julius Abitz and Margaret Brimeyer.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics and Tri-State Dialysis for all of the wonderful care they gave to Leo.

In lieu of flowers a Leo A. Abitz memorial fund has been established.
