John M. Waul, age 45, of Dubuque, was called home unexpectedly from natural causes at 7:05 a.m., on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at home. To honor John's life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, October 2, 2017, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Avenue, with Rev. Andrew Awotwe-Mensah officiating. To celebrate John's life, family and friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., on Sunday, October 1, 2017, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where a parish scripture wake service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

John was born on February 17, 1972, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of James and Janet (Schueller) Waul.

John was a proud graduate of Hempstead High School, class of 1990. He would go on to share his time and talents with the Dubuque Pack, EIMCO, and most recently with ProPulse. In his free time, John loved spending time in the great outdoors; whether it was casting his line in search of bragging rites for catching "the big one", waiting patiently in the blind for the perfect rack to slowly rise over the horizon, hitting the freshly coated trails with the warming hum of the snowmobiles, or even getting together with friends to put on the greatest fireworks show to date. John also enjoyed a fun evening of cold beers and hot exhausts with friends at the races, and was always up for a spirited game of cards eagerly awaiting the opportunity to go "Big" and "Alone". John's greatest joy, however, was definitely found in the truly special moments he would spend with his family, especially his nephews. We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of our beloved brother, uncle and friend at such a young age. Time and faith will be our strength moving forward, but for today we find real comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his parents, and we are grateful to have many wonderful memories of an always smiling and continually friendly man who absolutely lived life to it's fullest and embraced every moment.

Those left to cherish John's memory include

his siblings,
James (Mary Kay) Waul, Platteville, WI
and Joyce (Jay) Valentine, Dubuque, IA;

and 3 nephews,
Jaime and Tyler Waul and Ben Valentine.

John was preceded in death by his parents.

A John M. Waul memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among his favorite charities.
