Army Emblem

James L. "Jim" Nelson, age 81, of Dubuque, Iowa, and formerly of Downers Grove, IL, was called home suddenly at 6:10 a.m., on Friday, March 10, 2017, at home. To honor Jim's life, funeral services will be held in Downers Grove, Illinois. Burial will be in the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is in charge of arrangements.

Jim was born on February 12, 1936, in Chicago, IL, son of Robert and Dorothy (Muehe) Nelson.

Jim proudly served his country as an Army Ranger during the Korean War. After completing his military service, he would spend his early working years in the construction fields and also as a loyal volunteer Firefighter and EMT with the Lombard Illinois Fire Department. Jim was united in marriage to his beautiful bride, Susan Holland, on May 2, 1987, in Westmont, Illinois, and they were blessed with 29 years and 2 wonderful daughters. Jim would invest over 20 years of his primary working career with the U.S. Postal Service before finally retiring in 1998. When Jim wasn't working to provide for his family, you could easily find him working on his next home improvement project, spending an afternoon hoping to catch a few fresh fish on his line, or even dreaming and planning out his next skiing or hunting trip. But Jim's primary focus in life was definitely his family. Whether it was providing for them, nurturing them, or even just spending a little quality time together, Jim was always feeling fulfilled when some family time had made its way into his day. Sadly, Jim has been called home after putting up a good fight with some health issues over the past few years. Thankfully, he leaves us with a wealth of memories, and lessons, to carry us all through until we eventually see him again in his new and perfect Heavenly state. Jim will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him!

Those left to cherish Jim's memory include

his loving wife,
Susan Nelson, Dubuque, IA;

his daughters,
Hillary (Dustin) Baker, Dubuque, IA
and Kaitlynn Nelson, Dubuque, IA;

his son,
James Nelson, IL;

his grandson,
Quinton Baker, Dubuque, IA;

and his brother,
Robert (Judaline) Nelson, Downers Grove, IL.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Bill Nelson.

A James L. "Jim" Nelson memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among his favorite charities.
