Irene E. Horkheimer, age 93, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 4:18 a.m., on Friday, January 12, 2018, at ManorCare Health Services, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Irene's life, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, January 15, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, with Deacon John Stierman officiating. To celebrate Irene's life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m., until the time of services at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, January 15, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Irene was born on October 29, 1924, in Grant County, North Dakota, daughter of Joseph and Bessie (Hayter) Broadhead.

Irene was united in marriage to the love of her life, Edwin Horkheimer, on January 14, 1942. They were truly blessed with 63 wonderful years together, and 4 adored children, before he was called home ahead of her on April 2, 2005. Irene definitely cherished her role as wife, mother and homemaker; always nurturing those she loved and proudly taking meticulous care of her home. She was a naturally gifted cook and baker who was well known for her delicious culinary creations, which she so eagerly shared with her family and friends. Irene was also an accomplished seamstress and quilt maker who was always anxious to start her next project which would eventually be shared with those around her. In her free time, Irene always enjoyed an evening with her favorite bingo dauber in hand, or even a fun, yet competitive, game of cards which anyone willing to sit at the table. All who were fortunate enough to spend time with Irene would quickly discover her great love of country music and were frequently sure to catch a familiar tune playing in the background. Most of all though, Irene absolutely loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and every conversation, visit, or gathering was continually viewed as an opportunity to create a memory to be cherished. We are deeply saddened at the loss of our dear mom, grandma, sister and friend; but we do take comfort in the fact that she is now reunited with her beloved Edwin, and they will be spending their first heavenly anniversary together again this year.

Those left to cherish Irene's memory include

John (Carol) Horkheimer, Dubuque, IA,
Paul (Judy) Horkheimer, Dubuque, IA,
