Love Emblem

Geraldine M. "Geri" Leslein, age 82, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 12:02 a.m., on Friday, November 24, 2017, at home, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Geri's life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Avenue, with Rev. Dwayne J. Thoman officiating. To celebrate Geri's life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Monday, November 27, 2017, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where a parish scripture wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Geri was born on April 26, 1935, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Theodore and Mabel (Oswald) Ewert.

Geri was a proud, lifelong resident of Dubuque. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Donald "Hoss" Leslein. They enjoyed their loving years together, and were blessed with 3 deeply adored children, before he was sadly called home ahead of her on June 13, 2008. Geri was not only a full-time wife and mother who took great pride in caring for her home and family, but she also invested many years of her working career with both Medical Associates and Clarke College. She was very active and strong in her faith life and was a longtime member of St. Mary's Church, until eventually joining Holy Ghost Church. In her free time, Geri enjoyed taking any opportunity to sit at the waters edge and routinely cast a baited line in search of "the big one" which would earn her bragging rites for the day. Geri also enjoyed creating colorful hats for the newborns at both Mercy and Finley Hospitals, as well as adult hats for the Mission. Everyone who was fortunate to know and love Geri has surely benefitted from her talented love of embroidery and crochet work. We surely find difficulty in embracing the Thanksgiving spirit today after having to temporarily say farewell to our amazing mother, grandmother, sister and friend; but we know that her soul lives on in peace, love and perfection now and that she is finally reunited with the love of her life, Don. Geri, we will surely treasure every memory and lesson of love, patience and kindness you leave behind.

Those left to cherish Geri's memory include

her children,
Danyiel (Rob) Peterson, Dubuque, IA,
Bonnie Davenport, Bountiful, UT
and Robert Leslein, Yuma, AZ;

her 6 grandchildren,
Todd Rettenberger, Jason (Jaclyn) Rettenberger, Amy (Scott) Peterson-Sniff, Tiffany (David) Blue, Troy (Shannon) Peterson and Ashleigh (Dan) Harten;

her 10 great-grandchildren,
David Blue, Eden Blue, Chey Peterson, Naomi Rettenberger, Sami Peterson, Jack Peterson, Nic Harten, James Harten, Jaylyn Rettenberger and Abe Harten;

and her sister,
Pat Paar, Dubuque, IA.

Geri was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don Leslein; 2 sisters, Gloria (Ed) Breson and Carol Deutsch; 3 brothers, Ted Ewert, Richard (Ellen) Ewert and Robert (Toni) Ewert; a son-in-law, Jim Davenport, and a brother-in-law, John Paar.

A Geraldine M. "Geri" Leslein memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among her favorite charities.

Geri's family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Hospice Compasses for their kind, compassionate and professional care of Geri, and her family.
