Tribute & Message From The Family

Romayne R. Schmitt, age 92, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 6:50 p.m., on Sunday, December 31, 2017, at ManorCare Health Services, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Romayne's life, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, January 5, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, with Rev. Karen Candee officiating. To celebrate Romayne's life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m., until the time of services at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, January 5, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

Romayne was born on March 20, 1925, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Raymond and Ina (Palmer) Roggensack.

Romayne was a proud lifelong resident of Dubuque, where she graduated from Dubuque Senior High School, before going onto Bayless Business College to complete her education. She would put her degree to good use at Farley and Loetscher, until she eventually met and married the love of her life, Chester Schmitt, on January 15, 1944, and finally became a loving and full-time wife, mother and homemaker. Romayne and Chester were blessed with 61 wonderful years together, and 3 adored children, before he was sadly called home ahead of her on September 30, 2005. In her free time, Romayne enjoyed the many friendships she developed within her membership in the Eastern Star, with her classmates from the Class of '42, and also with all of her fellows residents at ManorCare. She also enjoyed hiking and biking on Heritage Trail with Chester, but what truly brought Romayne joy was the precious time she was able to spend with her children and grandchildren. We are definitely beginning 2018 with broken hearts, but we accept that Romayne's 92 year journey has been completed now and we are forever grateful that she is, once again, reunited with her loving husband, Chester, and her parents. We love you, we will miss you, and we are thankful for the time the Lord was kind enough to share you with us Romayne. May God continue to bless you until we meet again.

Those left to cherish Romayne's memory include

her children,
David (Sue) Schmitt, Dubuque, IA,
Paul (Ernestine) Schmitt, Dubuque, IA
and Diane (Pat) O'Rourke, Maquoketa, IA;

her grandchildren,
Ron, Jon and Adam (Ashley) Schmitt
and Keevin O'Rourke and Aubrie (Jeremy) Stuckey;

her great-grandchildren,
Colton, Carter, Kayla, Ethan, Hunter and Tristan.

Romayne was preceded in death by her parents; and her loving husband, Chester Schmitt.

A Romayne R. Schmitt memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among her favorite charities.

Romayne's family would like to thank the nurses and staff at ManorCare, especially Lynn and Donna, for all of the kind, compassionate, and professional care of Romayne, and her family these past years.

Condolence & Memory Journal

Condolences to Romayne's family from Jane (Curtis) Leibold and family. Mother (Jane) is 5 days older than Romayne. Romayne was one of Mom's best friends growing up and at Farley. Jane is living with her oldest son Joe in Morton Illinois. Romayne is embracing Jane in the two pics that I added to this site. I do have a few additional photos if the family is interested in sending me an email. Jeff Leibold
